To be honest, when I proposed this show I
was not all that well versed in Anne Frank. Of course I knew who she was,
what had happened to her... but I hadn't read the book as anything but
homework. But I knew a story this big, that reverberated with so many, was
a story I wanted to tell. So, I cracked open the book. And read it twice.
And read it again to annotate it. And I fell in love with Anne Frank.
From that point on I don't recall
a moment when I didn't know how I wanted to present this material. I
watched the original film, and did a lot of reading, and was struck by the
way Anne was always subjugated to her circumstances. Of course the story of
Anne Frank is the story of how a few persecuted individuals dealt with
man's inhumanity to man at it's most terrifying. You cannot ignore or
remove that (nor should anyone want to). But the amazing thing about
"The Diary Of Anne Frank" is Anne
Frank. By some miracle the stars aligned to put this incredibly talented
writer, this plucky little heroine, this pillar of strength and amazing
example of dignity and, more than anything else, integrity, in the right place
and the right time to create something that is journal, novel and
historical record... a timeless work of art that will inspire millions for
all time.
And Anne Frank did not stop
living when she went into hiding. Her story is the story of a soul that
would not be squelched. Despite her circumstances, she lived a life. And
lives on to this day because of it.
